May 30, 2019· BEIJING • China is ready to use rare earths to strike back in a trade war with the United States, Chinese newspapers warned yesterday in strongly worded commentaries on a move that would ...

Jun 03, 2019· China is the world's leading producer of rare earths, but Beijing's ability to use them as a weapon is fairly limited, according to several analysts.

By 2000, China accounted for more than 95% of world rare earth production. China is also the dominant consumer of rare earths, which they use mainly in the manufacture of electronics products for domestic use as well as export. Japan and the United States are the world's second and third largest consumers of rare earths.

Rare earth metals are actually not as rare as their name might imply. Critical to high-performance optics and lasers and key to the most powerful magnets and superconductors in the world, rare earths are simply more difficult to mine than most metals and generally don't accumulate into rich ores.

Specifically, the use of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and other metals that are part of an EV lithium-ion battery pack has raised red flags about the poor human rights and worker protection records in the countries where these materials are mined. A lot of these warnings have been incorrectly categorized under "EVs and rare earth metals."

By 2020, sales of HEV/EVs are forecast to reach 9.4M units, with EVs forming 42% of sales. Though not all EV models are expected to use permanent magnet motors, demand for rare earth elements used in permanent magnets is forecast to increase by 10.5%py through to 2020, which will place significant strain on existing rare earth mines and processors.
